South Africa Women, under the leadership of skipper Laura Wolvaardt, are set to kick off their tri-series campaign against India on Tuesday, April 29, as they build towards the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in India.
While this marks the Proteas’ first outing in the ongoing series, India heads into the contest with confidence, having thrashed hosts Sri Lanka by nine wickets in their opening match on Sunday.
Speaking to the media ahead of the game, Wolvaardt expressed confidence in her side’s preparations:
“We’ve had solid training camps over the past few months, focusing on match scenarios to simulate real-time pressure. Hopefully, that gives us a good start tomorrow.”
This tri-series also heralds a new era under head coach Mandla Mashimbyi, who is leading the South African women’s team for the first time. Wolvaardt is optimistic about the fresh direction:
“It’s our first full tour with Coach Mandla. He brings strong energy and has already made noticeable changes. His approach is quite different, and I think that can benefit the team in the long run.”
Featuring India, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, the tri-series provides a competitive platform that closely mirrors the World Cup environment. Wolvaardt believes this setup is invaluable:
“Playing in a series like this tests our adaptability. You face multiple teams in one tournament — much like a World Cup. It builds pressure and gives you a chance to earn a place in the final.”
She also highlighted the variety in South Africa’s bowling attack:
“This is the most spin options I’ve had since becoming captain, and it’s exciting. We’ve got a strong mix with the ball.”
India, who have historically held the edge over South Africa in ODIs — with 18 wins from 31 encounters — come into the match with momentum. But Wolvaardt believes the Proteas’ acclimatization in Sri Lanka will work in their favor.
“We’ve had a few productive days here in Colombo, adjusting to the intense heat and humidity, which are very different from what we’re used to back home,” she said.
“The time spent in the nets and getting used to the pitch conditions has been really helpful. We’re feeling well-prepared for tomorrow’s challenge.”
