The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed hefty fines on Rishabh Pant, captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC), and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) team for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct regarding slow over-rate during their recent match against the Mumbai Indians (MI).
The incident occurred during the thrilling encounter between DC and MI, where both sides fought hard, but administrative regulations were not adhered to strictly when it came to the pace of play.
According to the BCCI’s official release, Rishabh Pant has been fined ₹24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate, as this was his team’s second offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses.
In addition to the captain’s fine, the rest of the Delhi Capitals players have each been fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee — whichever amount is lower.
Similarly, the Lucknow Super Giants have been penalized for their part in maintaining a sluggish over-rate during their clash against MI, though the primary focus of the BCCI statement centered on Rishabh Pant’s leadership and responsibility as team captain.
In a stern message, the BCCI stated:
“Rishabh Pant, captain of Delhi Capitals, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match #XX of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Mumbai Indians. This is the team’s second offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses.”
The BCCI continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining the flow of the game, ensuring that all matches are completed within the stipulated time frame to enhance viewer experience and maintain tournament discipline.
This fine adds to the growing pressure on Rishabh Pant, who is already under scrutiny for his team’s mixed performances this season. Maintaining proper over-rate is crucial not only to avoid fines but also to ensure potential points deductions, which could impact the playoff race if slow-over rates persist.
DC management has reportedly issued an internal advisory to ensure that over-rates are monitored more carefully in upcoming matches.
With the IPL 2025 season entering its crucial phase, teams will be under even closer watch. BCCI’s move sends a clear message — no tolerance for delays, regardless of star power or match importance.
Both Rishabh Pant and the Delhi Capitals will be looking to bounce back strongly, ensuring discipline both on and off the field as they fight for a place in the playoffs.
