In a significant move that marks the entry of another sports personality into Indian politics, former Indian cricketer Kedar Jadhav has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The announcement came on April 8, 2025, during a formal induction ceremony held at the BJP headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The joining ceremony was graced by top BJP leaders including Chandrashekhar Bawankule, President of Maharashtra BJP, and Ashok Chavan, a senior party leader. Kedar Jadhav was given a warm welcome, and party leaders hailed his decision as a proud moment for both Maharashtra and the BJP.
Bawankule remarked,
“It’s a day of happiness for us. In all spheres of life, Kedar has had an impact. His decision to join BJP is commendable, and I welcome him home.”
Speaking at the event, Kedar Jadhav shared his reasons for stepping into politics, emphasizing the strong influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on his life and ideology.
He stated,
“Since 2014, when the BJP government came to power, I’ve been inspired by the leadership and work of PM Modi and CM Devendra Fadnavis. Their dedication to the nation and vision for development deeply influenced me. My aim is to follow their footsteps and make a meaningful contribution through the BJP.”
Jadhav also expressed his commitment to serve the people of Maharashtra, especially the youth and underprivileged, by using his public image and experience to bring attention to key social issues.
Kedar Jadhav, aged 40, is a well-known name in Indian cricket. A right-handed middle-order batsman and part-time off-spinner, Jadhav made his mark in international cricket between 2014 and 2020.
Apart from international cricket, Jadhav was a star performer in domestic cricket for Maharashtra and featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for multiple franchises, including Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was part of the CSK squad that lifted the IPL trophy in 2018 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
Jadhav officially retired from all forms of cricket in June 2024, after over a decade of service to Indian cricket.
Jadhav’s induction into BJP comes at a crucial time, as the party gears up for the upcoming civic and state elections in Maharashtra. The BJP is actively strengthening its base in key constituencies, and the addition of a popular face like Kedar Jadhav is seen as a strategic boost.
His popularity among cricket fans and his clean, disciplined public image make him a valuable asset for the party, especially in connecting with the youth and sports enthusiasts across the state.
Kedar Jadhav joins a growing list of sports personalities turning to politics after retirement, following in the footsteps of names like Gautam Gambhir, Kirti Azad, Navjot Singh Sidhu, and others.
As India witnesses the merging of celebrity influence with political outreach, the BJP seems to be leveraging this trend effectively to widen its appeal.
While it’s not yet announced whether Jadhav will contest elections in the near future, insiders suggest he may soon be given responsibilities within the Maharashtra BJP’s youth or sports cell. His entry has already sparked buzz in political circles and among fans.
As Jadhav transitions from stadiums to political rallies, all eyes will be on his next moves. Will he become a voice for athletes in policymaking? Or will he rise as a youth leader within the BJP? Time will tell.
